There’s no denying that the University of Northampton is on the up, with extensive investment plans and a goal to be the UK’s leading university for social enterprise by 2015, as part of their ‘Raising the Bar’ strategic plan. They are already the only Changemaker Campus in the UK. All students get the opportunity to work in a social enterprise as part of their degree, not only helping the local community, but also improving their CV and job prospects in the process. Northampton is currently split over two campuses, Park and Avenue, with a third campus, the £330m Waterside, under construction, although this will not open until at least 2018. Both current campuses are within easy reach of the town, with its wealth of facilities, and are centrally located for easy access from anywhere in the UK.
There has been considerable investment as part of the Raising the Bar plans, including a £1.7m extension to the business school, £3.8m spent on the school of education, £¾m invested in the school of social sciences, a £900,000 refurbishment of the Park campus library, £500,000 spent on halls and a total of £11m spent on the Avenue campus, to make it a state of the art technology and research centre. Each campus has its own student union facilities, which have also been recently improved, along with a student radio and industry standard media centre. There is a nightclub on the Park campus.
The university provides shuttle buses between the two campuses and the town centre. Northampton sits close to the M1 and on the main East Coast rail line to London. Both London and Birmingham are under an hour away, with regular trains and coaches.
There are 1,673 beds in the student halls although there is no guarantee of accommodation for freshers mentioned on the website. The price you pay will depend on the room you choose, and if you are prepared to share your room and your loo, you could stay for under £50 per week.
All undergraduate degrees cost £8,500 per year
Northampton offers bursaries of between £500 and £1,000 per year for all students from homes with an income under £42,600. Northampton also offers NSP scholarships along with a number of privately funded scholarships worth up to £15,000, although these are usually subject specific and have strict criteria.
