Some top tips to get you through your university interview

Jump for joy, you've been accepted to university! But wait, the letter says 'pending a successful interview'…

So now you have to impress someone without spell check, a thesaurus, and someone to proof read everything you send - that’s enough to make anyone nervous!

But have no fear, here are some top tips to get you through your university interview:

Tip one: Know where you're going

The acceptance letter will have an address, so get on Google maps and plan your route. Find out how long it will take and always leave at least 30 minutes to account for traffic, parking and finding your interview room.

Tip two: Be prepared

Make sure you have all the necessary paperwork. You should have a check-list on the letter that tells you what you should bring, if there isn’t then phone and ask. Usually you’ll need two forms of identification, the letter of acceptance and all certificates of qualification to date.

Tip three: Plan ahead

Take some time to think about what you will be asked. Questions will depend on your course, so imagine what they want to hear and put together some clear, concise answers. Be careful not to just memorise answers though, they want to learn more about you, not just be shown how good your memory is.

Tip four: Dress to impress

Your university might not require you to wear a suit for your interview but jeans and trainers won’t cut it. Your outfit needs to be clean, ironed, and keep business wear in mind when you’re choosing what to wear.

Tip five: Look bothered

Posture is very important, so practise sitting up straight, with your shoulders back, and your hands open. Remember to keep your head up, and don’t be afraid to make eye contact. Slouching or crossing your arms can make you look uninterested or confrontational.

Tip six: Stay calm

When you get called in take a few deep breaths and focus on your overall goal, getting into university. See your interview as a hurdle on your way and visualise yourself clearing it!

Good luck!
